About the Ragged Press

The Ragged Press will be the publishing arm of the Ragged University, producing manuscripts on its behalf, but also act independently to support unknown authors. The Ragged Press will publish works, be it fact or fiction, by previously unknown but promising authors, allowing them to see their work in print and make a profit from it without losing their copyright. Once produced, these books will be added to the Ragged Press online database, enabling copies to be bought either as an eBook or in paperback form. The Ragged Press is a ‘not for profit’ organisation, meaning the authors will gain all profits from the sale of these books.

In this current economic climate the publishing industry, along with every other industry, has had to tighten its belt. The unfortunate result of this is that many manuscripts, especially those that are atypical and therefore have an unknown profitability, may not be taken on by profit driven publishing houses.

Although The Ragged Press will not have the funds to provide large advertising campaigns or book signings to its authors like the profit driven publishing houses, the ‘not for profit’ model allows the Ragged Press to take on the atypical manuscripts. It is, instead, the aim of The Ragged Press to showcase these works and act both as way for these authors to turn their works into funds and also help them develop a proven sales record that can be used to encourage the larger publishing houses to offer them a publishing contract. By encouraging authors to retain the rights to their own works they will be able to sign a publishing contract with a profit driven publisher regardless of previously published manuscripts with The Ragged Press. All we ask is that the publishing house, and the author, offer their support to our project in the future.
